Chapter 5
Events occuring after I was made to play Tarot, and the magic that followed
I left my house, business as usual, and eventually retired to bed at half past ten, but found my three windows open. Over my head, inside the house, I heard the strangest sound, like the roaring of wild beasts. But when I lit my candle, I could not see the source of the noise. Eventually I went back to bed, but the sound returned, much closer, with thumping sounds all around me, but especially under my bed.
Frightened, I got up and moved to the sofa, thinking perhaps it would be quieter there, but no! The sound stayed with me, until I decided to leave my apartment. I came home when my cleaning lady came to make my rooms. I asked her if she could see the reason for the noise under my bed and sofa, but she assured me I was dreaming, and wouldn’t hear anything the next night.
When night came, I went to bed and soon fell asleep, exhausted. But the next morning I felt as if I’d been tortured, my arms and legs broken. My housekeeper assured me that what I felt was the pain of sleeping in some bad position, and tonight, if I found a better position, I would sleep better…though she knew that I would not be sleeping peacefully that night. But she had to keep up the appearance of giving me good advice.
And so I went to sleep again, careful of how I slept, and next morning my suffering was still the same. I waited for my maid/therapist to return, another night’s evidence to overwhelm her when she gave me the same advice as before. I decided I would make a third attempt at sleep, leaving my anger behind me. My housekeeper came again, and pretended not to believe me. The two villains needed to keep me occupied long enough to complete their spell.
